since when?

I just read the following sentence in the morning paper "the Bush administration said today that its policy was 'not to make bombing threats.' " .... and since when was this, since about 5 minutes ago?

edit - and how is it that I missed spelling that word incorrectly for several days. Ugh.

I saw the silliest poster ever today ...

while walking home from the ‘el’. Actually, I’ve seen this poster for a few weeks now, but I just got around to expressing how funny it strikes me. It is for a band, party, or something called “New Indie Mafia” and it has a drawing of a guitar/machine gun on it. Sorry indie rockers, but I can’t imagine anything less threatening or more amusing than an organized crime outfit consisting entirely of indie rockers. So what happens when I borrow money from ‘Nigel’ of Wilmette and do not pay him back? Is he going to send over some skinny bass player to whine and moan outside my window until I repay him? I've been picturing the Sopranos cast replaced by members Belle and Sebastian all week now.

I don’t know what makes me angrier, what happened five years ago today, or the direction it catapulted us as a nation. I believe it may be the latter, as we actually had control over that, and squandered it to embrace fear, xenophobia, and greed.

Saying goodbye

Last night I shopped at Marshall Field’s for the last time. As I took the escalator down the middle of the store, I saw a giant inflatable Macy’s star and was unable to suppress the audible ‘hrmph’ of disgust that passed my lips. The two elderly women in front of me turned and laughed and one said ‘I know, this just ain’t right’. No, it ain’t right. Not at all.
